History of the French Bulldog

The French Bulldog originated in 19th Century Nottingham, England, where lace makers decided to make a smaller, miniature, lap version of the English Bulldog that was referred to as a "toy" bulldog. In the 1860s, when the Industrial Revolution drove the craftsmen to France, they took their dogs with them. The toy bulldogs became popular in France and were given the name the "French Bulldog." The breed eventually made its way back to England for dog shows. The Brits were not happy with the name "French" given to a dog that was originally from England, however the name "French Bulldog" stuck. Favored pets of royalty (King Edward VII of England, and the Romanovs of Russia), they have been the rage of Paris, and the status symbol of wealthy Americans.  A prized French Bulldog even went down on the Titanic.  Today they are a rare breed, but are gaining in popularity.  They have a distinctive look and winning personalities. The popularity of this breed of bulldog is growing by leaps and bounds! Everyone is interested in the frenchie!  Frenchies are often seen in the cities because they require very little exercise and are small enough to live comfortably in an apartment.  Their fun personalities make them a fantastic dog for families and people who want to own a dog that will make them laugh!
